Pressure-induced trivalent gadolinium cations exchange in various porous materials

  Several recent studies have raised the exciting possibility that cation exchange in non-framework of natrolite(Na16Al16Si24O80·16H2O),the small-pore zeolite,is possible under pressure.[1] Among cationexchanged natrolite,sodium-to potassium cation exchange expands the unit-cell volume by ca.10%,which is coupled with rotation of chains and opening windows.[2,3] Furthermore,between 0.8 and 1.5 GPa,volume expansion of natrolite family occurs by taking up water selectively from the pressuretransmission fluid.[3] In this study,3 samples such as Ag-natrolite,Low silicate zeolite,and ZIF8 using gadolinium(Ⅲ)nitrate hexahydrate solution were probed with ex situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction at room temperatures and pressures up to 5 GPa.
