Packed capillary columns are widely used in micro/nano-scale high-performance liquid chromatography, with advantages of high sample capacity, high separation efficiency and good reproducibility. However, the preparation of packed capillary columns has great difficulty in making the high rigid and high permeable frits within the capillaries to immobilize the packing particles. In addition, for ion-exchange packed capillary column, the frits should be hydrophilic to avoid the non-specific absorption or hydrophobic interactions of samples. In this paper, the hydrophilic monoliths were easily prepared at one end of the capillaries as the frits, by thermally polymerization with poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) as the monomer and 1-propanol as the porogen. The frits were demonstrated good rigidity, good permeability and good hydrophilicity.
