Grasslands account for 40%of the national land area in China, play an important role in raising livestock, carbon sequestration, and biotic,ecological,socio-economic and cultural functions. The development of grassland rodent pest control and research is driven by the need for control of rodent-borne diseases and management of grassland ecosystem degradation. It can be chronologically summarized into five periods: (i) pre-1950s,the ecological regulation stage, characterized by the natural ecological regulation of rodent populations; (ii) 1950-1965,the epidemic prevention stage, characterized by the construction of the national health and epidemic prevention system and legal system; (iii) 1966-1980,chemical pesticides oriented stage, characterized by dealing with the crisis potential of plague and rodent-caused grassland degradation, and ecological problems associated with using acute toxic rodenticides; (iv) 1981-2000,grassland integrated pest management (IPM) stage,ecologically-based approaches were proposed; (v) 2001-present,sustainable control stage.Considerable attention has been given to the integrity of the ecological systems. The ecological mechanisms were also taken into account in designing sustainable management and applications.
