Fukushimagata lagoon,located in the northern area of Niigata city,Japan,is the largest wintering area for Middendorffs Bean Goose (Anser fabalis middendorffii) classified as a semi-endangered species on the red list in Japan.About 5,000 geese,55% of the total migration to Japan,stay in Fukushimagata lagoon during the period of the late September to March.Their main diet during their stay is Manchurian Water Rice (Zizania latifolia),one of the emergent macrophytes.However,the habitat of Manchurian Water Rice has been dramatically decreasing since 1975: 80ha,about 40% of the lagoon area,in 1975,50ha in 1988and 20ha in 1999.
