The formation of triple complexes of DNA-liposome-multivalent cations is accompanied by the aggregation and partial fusion of liposomes as we showed by freeze-etching technique.DNA acts as a fusogen in this process,and it unwinds in the region of liposomes fusion.The addition of nuclease S 1 to the triple complexes caused a complete fusion of liposomes and the formation of giant liposomes (1-10 mkm in diameter).The addition of DNA,phosphatidylcholine liposomes,and Mg2+ ions to an egg extract of Xenopus laevis lead to the formation in liposomes of structures resembling nuclear pores but of a smaller diameter.Similar structures was shown in liposomes after staining of triple complexes with terbium or lanthanum.By electron microscopy (freeze-etching technique and by Tb3+ and La3+ staining of triple complexes) we have showed partial fusion of liposomes area,associate with untwisting DNA regions.
