Ten thousand and ninety two strains of Shigella species isolated from patients at the ICDDR,B diarrhoea treatment center,Dhaka in Bangladesh between January 1997 and December 2004 were characterized extensively at phenotypic and genotypic level.S.flexneri was found to be the most predominant (62%) followed by S.boydii (17%),S.sonnei (10%),S.dysenteriae (8%),and Shigella-like organism (3%).Among the serotypes and subserotypes of S.flexneri,serotype 2a was the dominant during the above period of study except in 1998,when it was replaced by serotype 2b.In recent times,S.dysenteriae (Sd) type 1 acquired resistance against fluoroquinolone and a single clone disseminated through out the South Asia,reflecting a possible pandemic by this clone in near future.The previously predominant Sdl was replaced by Sd4 with an unusual outbreak in 2000.It is very interesting to note that serotype specific plasmids were found in almost all of the serotypes and subserotypes of Shigella.In addition,most of the Shigella spp.
