There are a large number of small towns and communities located in the arid and semi-arid regionsof Australia. Efficient water use is an important precursor to socio-economic development in these regions andcan be enhanced by the introduction of efficient wastewater treatment and reuse. Currently the occurrence ofwastewater reuse is low due to the lack of appropriate and efficient wastewater treatment technologies. Forexample, the oxidation pond process is faced with a number of inefficiencies such as treatment time, treatmentquality, and poor water reclamation and has associated environmental hazards (e.g. waterlogging and salinity). Aproject which examines domestic wastewater treatment and reuse in arid regions began in 1998 and is located atCoolgardie in Western Australia. Results of the experimental wastewater treatment system, using carbon-fibrebased bio-filtration technology, indicate that the quality of treated water is suitable for reuse as irrigation water. This paper is concerned with characteristics of indicating organism so as to improve maintenance andmanagement.
