The two most important aspects of tail lamp design are: intensity test point performance according to specification, and creating a desired spatial distribution.Often the latter aspect is critical for brand distinction, and thus is just as important as passing test point requirements. For this work, we chose the (United Nations) ECE intensity test point specifications provided for tail lamps.Different optical design approaches were then used for specific tail lamp functions with LED sources [ll.Each design type considered was tested and optimized to meet its particular ECE intensity point specifications, as well as to achieve a pleasing spatial distribution of a given size and shape.Designs included: a faceted reflector approach, light guides optimized for spatial uniformity, and an array of specially designed freeform lenses.
