In the absence of an effective vaccine against HIV-AIDS,major emphasis worldwide is on developing therapeutic strategies. To date, the most notable and effective were those that target the virus once it makes its way into the host ceil.Despite their effectiveness, continuous treatments with these reagents that target the intracellular virus suffer from drug-induced toxicities and evolution of drug-resistant virus strains. Therefore, targeting the extracellular virus is considered an alternate strategy, and one such drug effective in inhibiting virus-cell fusion has recentlybeen approved for human clinical application.
