Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent psychiatric diseases.Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and benzodiazepines (BZDs) are the most commonly prescribed anxiolytics. However, severe side effects for BZDs and taking effect much slowly for SSRIs render their use problematic. Thus, there is need for a deeper understanding of anxiety control mechanisms in mammalian brain, and to develop novel anxiolytic agents that have quicker anxiolytic potential and are clinically well tolerated.
