Aglaia odorata (L.)Lour.has been known to be an allelopathic plant.This experiment was conducted to determine the potential of A.odorata for Echinochloa crus-galli.weed control.All aqueous ethanol (25∶75 v/v) crude extracts from the dried leaf of A.odoratainhibited the germination and initial seedling growths against E.crus-galli.The inhibition percentages onE.crus-galli seed germination treated with 250 to 4,000 ppm (w/v)for 7 days was about 0 to 100%, respectively, whereas shoot length was inhibited 19.04 to 100% and root length was 22.0 to 100% inhibition, respectively.Further studies were extended to explore the impact of A.odoratacrude extract in wettable powder formulation (AWP) on imbibition and α-amylase activities of E.crus-galli seeds.The imbibition and α-amylase activities in the treated E.crus-galli seeds were progressively depressed with increasing AWP concentrations.The obtained results suggest that there existed certain inhibitory allelochemicals for weed germination in A.odorataseed.Greenhouse experiment was performed to explore the effect of AWP on the emergence and growth of the E.crus-galli was observed that AWP significantly reduced emergence and growth of E.crus-galli weed species in pots under greenhouse.In addition, paddy rice field experiment results showed that at 40 and 80 kg ai/ha.doses of application, emergence and growth of weeds were highly toxic, whereas there was less effect on the growth and yield attributes of rice.Rather, at this dose of application yield of rice increased significantly and the effect was similar to that observed with the herbicidal application under field conditions.Based on the study, it could be concluded that AWP possesses weed suppressing ability and could be used as a natural herbicide.
