The aim of this study was to measure differences in forefinger tapping frequency after upper-extremity nerve injuries between affected and unaffected hands.Fifty-eight patients with different types of upper-extremity nerve injuries were enrolled, including 36 males and 22 females. The diagnoses were 15 cases of brachial plexus injury,12 cases of ulnar nerve injury,13 cases of radial nerve injury,7 cases of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy, and 11 cases of median nerve injury.Healthy, uninjured people were enrolled as controls. An independent, patient "finger oscillating frequency tester" was used to detect forefinger tapping frequency. The results indicated that there was no significant difference between the forefinger tapping frequency of the unaffected hand following upper-extremity nerve injury and the ipsilateral hand of normal controls.Forefinger tapping frequency in the affected hand of patients was significantly lower than in normal control hands. These data demonstrate that the sensor-motor function of unaffected hands after upper-extremity nerve injury is maintained at a normal level, while function is reduced after direct central nervous injuries. The movement function of the unaffected hand in patients with peripheral nerve injury was not significantly altered.
