Several studies with Gas-Chromatography/Mass-Spectrometry (GC-MS) have shown that micro-organisms produce patterns of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are affected from the type and age of culture media and that can be used as biomarkers of disease.However, so far, the use of GC-MS analysis of these volatile fingerprints has been impeded by the need for expensive equipment, the degree of expertise required to operate such instruments, and the length of time required to obtain results.With thin in mind, we have recently developed a simple and inexpensive nanomaterial-based artificial olfactory system for diagnosing lung cancer via exhaled breath samples.
