Gibbsite is the usual precipitation product from alumina refineries with either Bayer or Sintering process.However, the advantage of boehmite precipitation over 8ibbsite precipitation is the significant energy savings in the subsequent calcinations step.Investigations clarified that gibbsite and boehmite could be precipitated from supersaturated sodium aluminates solutions at the same time, and the competitive formation between Al(OH)3 and gamma-AlO(OH) determines the main precipitate phases from pregnant liquor.The current investigation takes a pragmatic approach, measuring precipitation rates, determining product phase, morphology and particle size distribution,and assessing the impacts of main parameters such as seed, temperature, supersaturation level, etc., on the precipitation kinetics and adjustment capability of alumina hydrate type, in an attempt to determine the new process viability, especially in China and possible improvements to the existing processes.
