Alaknanda River is a major tributary of the Ganga River in its catchment area. The sediment erosion rate in the river basin is-356 t-km2/yr,which is twice of the global physical denudation rate. The chemical denudation rate of-I33 t-km2/year is nearly double that ofthe Ganga river basin and three times of the global average. The Alaknanda catchment area has manymajor hydroelectric power projects and is always in the news due to environmental concems;the recent mega floods of June 2013 also caused too much destructions of life and property in the basin.
