Removal of phosphorus and other components from eutrophic surface water

  Compromised water quality impacts many surface water resources worldwide.The decline in the water quality can be attributed to various pollutants discharged into water areas such as rivers, lakes and ponds.Most of the pollutants, such as nutrients, organic compounds, and bacteria, which were released into the water areas, are adsorbed onto the surface of the suspended solids (SS) and settle to the bottom.Phosphorus (P) is considered as the controlling element in the propagation of eutrophication in water bodies.Algal blooms threaten lake water quality and in order to control their growth, removal of P along with the SS is essential.Some lakes in Canada are classified as eutrophic and cannot be used for swimming, drinking water or other purposes.An example is Lac Caron located 75 km north of Montreal in Saint-Anne-des-Lacs, Quebec, Canada.The lake use is restricted to canoeing and other small boating activities.The focus of this study was monitoring and improving water quality by removing SS and phosphorus.Lake quality has been monitored since 2008.Nutrient levels vary substantially year to year.These results will be presented along with some preliminary pilot scale on-site filtration tests.The filtration process was evaluated for removal of turbidity, and phosphorus.Other algae were not substantially removed and thus not depleting the water components essential within the water column.The water quality improved in terms of SS and P removal rendering an effective treatment system with potential for in situ testing as the next step.
