This study concerns the comparison of the pulsed and continuous sprays from a port fuel injector under ambient conditions. The droplet diameter is measured by phase Doppler particle analyzer(PDPA)along the spray axis at 30 mm,50 mm,and 70 mm,at injections pressures of 2-6 bar.The configurations studied are single-hole,two-hole adjacent and two-hole diagonal configurations of a four-hole injector.PDPA results show that the droplet diameter increases along the spray axis of the single-hole and the adjacent-hole injector configurations, whereas it decreases in the case of the diagonal-hole configuration. The increase in the droplet diameter with axial distance in the former two cases is found to be due to coalescence of the droplets as they move downstream. The bigger droplets collide with the smaller droplets, resulting in their coalescence into a single droplet. The probability of coalescence of droplets is measured along the axis of the spray at the aforementioned locations using high speed imaging at 40000 frames per second in both the pulsed and continuous modes. The coalescence is found to be much more significant in the single-hole and the two-hole adjacent configurations than the two-hole diagonal configuration. The coalescence probability is found to decrease along the axis, within the available spatial resolution of 17 μm.The coalescence probability is found to be higher in case of pulsed sprays(over 2000 images in the pulsed cases)as compared to the continuous sprays. However, the Sauter mean diameter is found to be more in the case of the continuous mode than the pulsed mode.
