  Understanding the behavior of host lattice defects is essential to the successful application of persistent luminescence materials, because the optical properties of any insulating solid compound are primarily governed by their intrinsic defects.Sr2MgSi2O7 is among a new generation of persistent luminescence materials as alternatives for the currently key persistent luminescence material of SrAl2O4.Oxygen vacancies and strontium vacancies in Sr2MgSi2O7 have most often been mentioned to explain the persistent luminescence mechanism.
