Nowadays, there is an increased interest in the use of ash waste from biomass combustion, being a sustainable source of energy. The current paper reports an investigation on the replacement of cement and sand with coarse fly ash waste generated from combustion of wood waste. The ash was studied using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), laser diffraction particle size analyzer and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The effect of ash addition on cement hydration was investigated by volume stability (soundness), workability, calorimetry, and compressive strength measurements. The hydration was stopped and analysed using thermogravimetry (TG) and XRD.
