We present a new method--pinhole drying method making monolithic silica aerogel.Pinhole drying is a new production method in making silica aerogel by placing the silica alcogel in a tank with pinholes.A very slow shrinkage of alcogel at room temperature has made it possible producing aerogel without cracks. So we can precisely control the density of the aerogel by controlling the shrinkage of alcogel.Aerogel samples (show in Fig.1) with density of 200mg/cm3 and surface area of 709.03 lm2/g was obtained by pinhole drying method and supercritical drying. And the obtained aerogel is more transparent than conventional one.The transparency of the pinhole dried sample and conventional one at 600 nm wave length was measured to be 57% and 40%, with an improvement of 17%.The reason of this improvement may be due to the matter that we can obtain areogels with smaller particles than conventional by using pinhole drying method.
