Hypoxia may cause hypoxic stress in vascular endothelial cells, and intermittent hypoxia induces apoptosis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).HIF-1 a, a marker of hypoxic stress, is increased at the initial stage of intermittent hypoxia and can up-regulate both the factors promoting cell growth like VEGF and the factors damaging cells such as ET-1, so as to activate proliferation at the initial stage of hypoxia but induce apoptosis 12 hours later.Our present study demonstrated that HIF-1 α regulated ET-1 expression via C/EBP β through transcriptional regulation.
