Purpose There are two types of horizontal cells in the rabbit retina:A-type horizontal cells (AHCs) and B-type horizontal cells (BHCs).However, there is only one type horizontal cell in the mouse and rat retina:B-type horizontal cells. So,theres a doubt that why rabbit has two types of horizontal cells. This study was aimed to research the visual transduction in the rabbit retina only has AHCs or BHCs.Methods The A-type horizontal cell or B-type horizontal cell was injected with cytochrome C (Cc) on isolated rabbit retina whole-mount.Then the retina was cultured for some time until the apoptosis of targeted cell was induced and the death signals spread to other "bystander" cells.TUNEL assay was used to tested whether all of the apoptosis of the AHCs or BHCs were induced in a piece of rabbit retina. Results The AHCs and BHCs was injected with Cc,but till now there were not apoptosis of AHCs or BHCs in the targeted cells on the retina. We are working for finding a appropriate condition for inducing apoptosis of the AHCs or BHCs injected with Cc.If the AHCs or BHCs are resistant to Cc-induced cell death,we expect to find out the resistant mechanism of AHCs or BHCs in the rabbit retina.
