Urethral injuries are relatively uncommon in women due to very short length (approximately 4 cm) of urethra. The common causes of urethral injury among women in western world are same as that of man i.e.pelvic fractures resulting from polytrauma due to high velocity road traffic accidents. However, in our country the most common causes of urethral trauma among women are: obstetric trauma due to lack of proper maternity services especially in rural areas and sexual abuse among young girls. Both of these conditions lead to stretch injury of urethra and most such cases can be managed conservatively.Pelvic fractures are the third most common cause of urethral injury among Indian women and causes disruption at bladder neck along with urethral and vaginal tears. In such cases management depends upon the extent of injury and ranges from immediate reconstructive surgery to initial urinary divcrsion followed by reconstruction of genitourinary tract at a later date.We present a collective experience of managing fourteen cases of urethral trauma in Indian women over last 5 years.
