Rooftop greening is one of the most important urban greening methods in modern urbanisation.Growing population, deteriorative urban natural environment, shortage of energy and spaces lead to an increasing demand for green roofs as it will not occupy extra spaces but can provide various benefits from environmental, economic and social aspects.However, green roofs development has met great challenges in different countries because of the limitation of policy, funding, technology and awareness issues.Green roofs promotion in China is also blocked by those barriers.This dissertation will summarise previous studies on the barriers to green roofs development and focus on this progress in China by analysing the case study of Shanghai to carry out the research.Based on the interviews of six key actors, in which government, planning institute, consultant, construction contractor, real estate and residents are included, there will be a comprehensive discussion about their attitudes towards the barriers and their suggestions of green roofs development.Finally, possible recommendations for future promotion will be proposed and the limitation of the research will be concluded throughout the discussion.
