With passenger and freight traffic predicted to rise by around 19% and 13% respectively across Europe between 2000 and 2020 (COM 2006),existing railway assets will need to sustain greater volumes of traffic. This makes asset management and life-cycle assessment increasingly important. This International Union of Railways [UIC] led project is titled "MAINtenance, renewaL and Improvement of rail transport iNfrastructure to reduce Economic and environmental impacts"[MAINLINE] and helps to address this demand. The MAINLINE project is partly financed by the European Commission 7th Framework Programme.
