Epidemiologic studies are used to evaluate exposure-disease associations, using case-control and cohort studies. An example is radiation-induced thyroid cancer.Following the detonation in 1945 of A-bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the latency period for thyroid cancer was six years. The incidence of thyroid cancers in Belarus and Ukraine rose just four years after the Chemobyl disaster.Biomarkers of exposure, dose, susceptibility, and genetic damage may allow epidemiologic investigations to uncover specific pathways of human carcinogenesis. The practical impact of epidemiology is to decrease cancer incidence.Nowadays, proton treatment with intensity modulated radiotherapy technique can reduce dose to normal tissue greatly to avoid radiation-induced malignancies.
