Hydroxyectoine is hydroxyl derivative of ectoine and they are so-called compatible solutes that enable the halophilic organisms to survive under high salinity.In comparison with other compatible solutes,hydroxyectoine is more useful in biotechnology.Especially hydroxyectoine is highly suitable as protectant for desiccation of healthy cells during chemotherapy and molecular chaperon for Alzheimer disease.Halomonas ventosae DL7,moderately halophilic bacterium,exhibits the ability to accumulate both ectoine and hydroxyectoine.Hydroxylase of ectoine participates in the conversion of ectoine to hydroxyectoine.To isolate a fragment of the gene encoding the ectoine hydroxylase from H.ventosae DL7,we designed four pair primers and obtained two part of ectD gene sequence.Synthesis of hydroxyectoine by strain DL7 markedly increased with an increase of NaCl concentrations in medium.
