Fayalite is the main deposit phase of iron in copper slag, which is often found in the reducing environments of Moon and other Meteorites. But the oxidation state of the terrestrial mantle restricts the amount of Fe found in olivine on Earth. For this reason, synthetic fayalite is needed for use in reducing environment-analog and other studies. Here,a simple, fast, and reproducible method is presented to synthesis fayalite. The produced fayalite is nearly pure, only with minor amounts of silica (0.5-2.0%).The evolution progress of fayalite formation is monitored by XRD and XPS analyses at different time intervals. The presence of octahedral iron cation is observed along in the sample that had undergone 10 minute heat treatment. The Fe2p3/2 peak binding energy and intensity are analyzed extensively to show the diffusion of elemental iron and the growth of FeO at different stages of heat treatment, indicate that the wustite (FeO) formation is the critical step.Analysis of the Si2p and O1 s indicate that by diffusion and invasion of FeO on the surface of the silica, the new stable chemical bond Si-O-Fe is formed. This technique provides an abundant quantity of nearly pure fayalite for use in various future material science, and recycling mechanism of copper slag resource studies.
