The developing vasculature in zebrafish midbrain undergoes extensive vessel pruning, which is driven by changes in blood flow and leads to gradual reduction in the vasculature complexity with development. The occurrence position of vessel pruning could be largely predicted by haemodynamics-based numerical simulation of vasculature refinement. This model, which based on adaptation and optimization of biological transport networks, also indicates low and variable blood flow in pruned segment, which is consistent with experimental observation.
