Salt bridge and hydrogen bond formation and stabilization are an integral component of protein self-assembly and protein-protein interactions. However, while these interactions involve oppositely polarized amino acid residues, they occur within a water-hydrophobic interface, as the majority of the protein surface (~75%) is actually composed of hydrophobic residues.
