Al88Ce8Fe4 amorphous alloy was oxidized at 550℃ for 15,60,300 and 600 minutes. The microstructure and composition of the oxidized films were investigated using SEM,EDS and XRD.The hardness of the oxidized alloys and the electrochemical behavior of the oxide films were measured by micro-indentation and polarization techniques. The results show that oxidation at 550℃ results in nucleation and growth of metallic nanocrystals Al4Ce,fcc-Al and Ce from amorphous matrix, which initially enhance and then reduce the hardness (600-1000 MPa) of the alloy on the one hand and growth of crystalline oxide compounds Fe2O3,Al2O3 and AlFeO3 on the other hand. The corrosion resistance of the oxide films rate at 10-7-10-6 A/cm2 depending upon the oxidation duration. The results demonstrate the amorphous Al88Ce8Fe4 alloy is potential high temperature high strength aluminum alloy due to its high strength, oxidation and corrosion resistance.
