I will describe a new atavistic model of carcinogenesis in which a broad range of cellular capabilities important during embryogenesis and wound healing are the source of the hallmarks of cancer.Thus the capabilities that are understood as being "acquired" through genomic instability and strong selection in the popular somatic mutation model, are understood as being re-activated or "reacquired" capabilities in the new atavistic model.
