The current paper provides an overview over current activities at Fraunhofer ICT-IMM in the field of fuel processing of alcohol fuels.Apart from the 150,000 residential combined heat and power(CHP)natural gas fuel processor/fuel cell systems installed and operating in Japan, more than 6,000 methanol fuel processor/fuel cell systems mainly operated in India and Africa for the power supply of telecommunication systems are the second largest market of fuel cells.Logistics and toxicity of methanol are the major drawback in the latter case.Bioethanol is an excellent alternative to methanol. Therefore in the scope of the European project PEMBEYOND an ethanol fuel processor combined with a low temperature PEM fuel cell is under development. The system design involves apart from the fuel processor, which is operated at elevated pressure,a pressure swing adsorption unit,a buffer tank for the hydrogen produced and the fuel cell apart from battery buffers and power electronics.
