This study investigated the potential connection of the November and December Arctic Oscillation (AO-ND) with the following January East Asian temperature extremes and the possible mechanisms. It was found that the extreme cold (warm)events would be less (more) frequent in January over East Asia when the preceding AO-ND was in its positive phase; and vice versa.Further analysis revealed that an AO-ND related anomalous Rossby wave originated from the North Atlantic and extended eastward to East Asia, which could persisted into the following January.
