  Pretreatment is a critical step in gas biofuel production from lignocellulosic biomass.In this study,xylan and microcrystalline cellulose(MCC)were chosen as model compounds for lignocellulose,and pretreated through hydrothermal liquefaction(HTL).The effects of holding temperature(HT,xylan,190-210℃; cellulose,230-250℃),retention time(RT,0-20 min),and total solid content of the feedstock(TS,15-25%)on the HTL of xylan and cellulose were investigated via an orthogonal experimental design.HT,RT,and TS significantly affected the yields of reducing sugars and volatile fatty acids(VFAs),with HT being the most important factor.
