Tumors are often heterogeneous in nature and consist of multiple cell types with different phenotypic and molecular properties.Cancer stem-like cells (CSCs), a highly tumorigenic cell type found in diverse tumors and cancer cell lines, are regarded as the principal cause of tumor formation, metastasis, radioresistance and recurrence. The CSCs paradigm proposes that CSCs reside at the top of a cellular hierarchy that can result in either cellular proliferation or differentiation.
