Oxalate is a highly toxic molecule that contains an unreactive C-C bond and has a half-life of approximately 10,000 years [1].Biology has evolved three solutions to the problem of catalyzing the breakdown of oxalate [2],including thiamin-dependent decarboxylation of the thioester derivative in bacteria [3].Fungi and some soil bacteria, however, employ the manganese-dependent enzyme oxalate decarboxylase [4] to convert oxalate into carbon dioxide and formate via a mechanism about which little is definitively known.
