  The production of single chirality single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) is a formidable challenge,which is being approached vigorously from various angles.The bottom-up approach involves the rational chemical synthesis of either an end-cap or small slice of a SWCNT,which can then be used as a seed to grow nanotubes in a controlled fashion.Several groups have succeeded in synthesizing cyclic oligoarylenes (Itami, Jasti, Isobe,Müllen), and the Itami group has recently reported the production of tubular structures therefrom, albeit not it a fully controlled fashion.[1] The Scott group has reported the synthesis of a (5,5) SWCNT end-cap, but there is no report of it having been used as a seed in nanotube growth.[2]
