The transfer of desirable traits from wild relatives to crop plants is often complicated by operation of hybridization barriers.Post-fertilization barriers are frequently associated with abnormal development of the endosperm,which leads to seed abortion.In Arabidopsis species this type of barrier is due to genomic imprinting (Scott et al.,1998; Bushell et al.,2000).It has been proposed that imprinting also accounts for triploid block in which crosses between diploid (2x) and tetraploid (4x) plants of the same or closely related species fail due to abnormal endosperm development (Haig and Westoby,1991).
