With the technique of spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP), the spin polarization of hyperpolarized xenon can be enhanced by a factor of 10,000, which makes feasible to obtain the gas phase signal, like in the lungs airspace[1].Being a trace element in atmosphere, xenon is soluble in water, blood and tissues. Therefore, dissolved phase Xe MRI and molecular imaging could provide rich information related to chemical, biological and physiological changes beyond void space lung imaging. We successfully homebuilt xenon polarizer and gas delivery system for the animal pulmonary and brain disease model. The structure and function of the lung with radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) were comprehensively evaluated by the ventilation and diffusion HP 129Xe MRI.In addition, fMRI and stroke MRI in the rat brain have been demonstrated with hyperpolarized 129Xe[2-3], indicating it is more sensitive in comparison to the conventional 1H MRI, together with no background signal from xenon in biological tissue.
