The chronic valvular heart disease (VHD) is the commonest cause of acquired heart disease in children of 5-15 years age group. This is attributed to the acute rheumatic fever (ARF) which is immunological sequel of Group A Beta Hemolyticus Streptococcus (GABHS)throat infection. The disease entity can be directly correlated with human development indices, as is evident by virtual disappearance of disease in developed countries.Epidemiological aspects of ARF/RHD: Recent literature suggests still high prevalence of RHD in Asian countries.
