Hyoid fractures remain problematic in forensic science.The hyoid, thyroid and cricoid cartilages are examined in manual/ligature strangulations and hangings.Several authors anecdotally imply that injuries associated with hyper-flexion/extension of neck are more likely to fracture the hyoid than strangulation or hanging.This study assessed the relationship of hyoid fracture with cause of death, sex, age,bone union, and presence/absence of haemorrhage.
