In plants, effector-triggered immunity (ETI) is a major defense mechanism and often associated with programmed cell death (PCD).Although NB-LRR receptors involved in ETI have been extensively studied, how they activate PCD and disease resistance remains elusive as plants lack close homologs of caspases involved in PCD in animals.
