There have been significant strides in mercury control technology using injection of powdered activated carbons (PAC) in North America since the implementation of mercury emissions standards by provinces, states, and the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency ADA Carbon Solutions is a leading supplier of PAC to coal-fired facilities, including for power plants, municipal waste combustors, industrial boilers, and cement kilns. Our products have evolved dramatically through our understanding and application of basic science, control over our manufacturing process and vertical integration for raw material quality and consistency, and rapid concept-to-field prototyping of new advanced performance PACs in collaboration with our utility customers. The result is a PAC product suite that addresses a wide variety of applications and niche challenges. We have collaborated with end users to overcome initial concerns and resolve ash utilization and high sulfur fuel issues among others.Additionally, wet scrubbers can act as a reservoir for oxidized mercury, and PAC can be utilized in either the flue gas stream (for mercury in any form) or in the wet scrubber (for oxidized mercury) to secure the mercury and remove it from the emissions system in a stable form.Long-term stability of mercury, once capturedby PAC, has been demonstrated.Ongoing development work is continuing to minimize any adverse impacts on balance-of-plant operation or maintenance. Our PowerPAC(@) and FastPAC(@) product lines can be integrated into original system design or in a retrofit mode to control mercury emissions reliably and cost-effectively.
