Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can be used to modulate the activity of the primary motor strip.Specifically rTMS can either disrupt neural activity and decrease cortical activity or enhance motor cortex excitability and facilitate cortical functioning depending on the frequency of the stimulation.Based on this feature it is possible that rTMS could be used to increase the excitability of the motor cortex in conditions such as Parkinsons disease with consequent improvement in motor function, including functioning of the speech production musculature.The proposed paper will review the evidence to support the use of rTMS in the treatment of motor speech impairments.In addition the effect of rTMS applied to the tongue region of the motor cortex on articulatory function in individuals with dysarthria associated with Parkinsons disease will be reported.
