Advanced liver disease, which includes cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC),is a serious problem in China. In order to elucidate the status of these diseases, the medical records of 317 HCC patients and 62 liver cirrhosis patients were studied and a comparative analysis was performed.Among the HCC patients,89.0% of cases were due to hepatitis B virus (HBV),8.2% cryptogenic and only 2.8% of cases were hepatitis C virus (HCV) related. In contrast,11.3% and 9.7% of cases of cirrhosis were eryptogenic or HCV-related respectively, while HBV-related cases accounted for 79.0% The majority of patients were in their fifties. The HBV-related HCC patients were the youngest and had the highest percentage of males.Cryptogenic HCC patients had the highest levels of platelets,ALT and AST,and the lowest rate of cirrhosis.Compared with patients with HCC having severe fibrosis in noncancerous tissues, those with HCC and milder fibrosis were younger and had a lower rate of HBeAb positivity,a higher rate of HBsAb positivity and higher platelet counts.AST and AFP levels, male gender and HBcAh positivity were the four risk factors for development of HCC among HBV-related cirrhosis patients.
