Complete Sequence and Analysis of the Mitochondrial Genome of Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera)

  Coconut(Cocos nucifera L.),a member of the palm family(Arecaceae),is one of the most economically important crops in tropics as a source of food,drink,fuel,medicines and construction material.Based on next-generation sequencing data(Roche/454),we assembled the mitochondrial(mt)genome of coconut(C.nucifera)into a circular molecule of 678,133 bp in length with 45.5%GC content.The mt genome of C.nucifera encodes 64 proteins(78 genes),15 pseudogenes(19 genes,codon frameshift),23 tRNAs(17 amino acid codon and 1 stop codon,42 tRNA genes),and 3 ribosomal RNAs(x2),which constitute a gene content of 11.37%(77,125 bp)over the full length.In the whole genome,cp(chloroplast)-derived region accounts for 5.07%and includes 14 proteins(16 genes),3 pseudogenes(4 genes,codon frameshift),and 11 tRNAs(10 amino acid codon,13 tRNA genes).The mt genome have a relatively large repeat percent(13.26%),including forward(tandem)repeats and inverted(palindromic)repeats.
