With the technology advancing,we are accumulating data at the molecular, cellular, tissue, behavior and environmental level. As a consequence, how to first identify(disease)roots at various levels and then consistently link these roots is a challenging issue at the interface of collecting data, developing novel mathematical methods and solving significant science problems.Using two examples,we illustrate how we deal with the issue in Brain Science. The first example is on our recent successful endeavors on searching the roots in mental disorders.By developing a novel method called BWAS(brain-wide association study)and its mathematical foundation,we have applied it to autism, depression and schizophrenia. In particular, our results provide a solid foundation for the Big Bang theory in schizophrenia proposed by Tim Crow in 2008.The second example is on how to quantify your brain activity.Functional entropy is defined based on fMRI data(time series)and applied to aging and disease brain. We found that the entropy is an increasing function of time(aging),fitting well with the basic physical principle,i.e.entropy increases as time evolves. It is further found that entropy is positively correlated with IQ and creativity. The lower the entropy of a brain region is,the more flexible the brain region. Finally we discuss the implications of our findings with the aim to properly quantify our brains and its possible applications on artificial intelligence.
