This letter reports on the application of scanning heating laser source technique to the detection of micro–cracks which may hide from detection by conventional means. In this approach,we monitor the changes in the transmitted surface acoustic waves (SAWs) as the heating source is scanned over the crack.By exploiting the strong dependence of the acoustic pulses transmission efficiency on the state–open or closed –of the contacts between the crack faces, the experimental system for micro-crack detection by scanning heating laser source is set up.It is found that the micro-cracks can be detected successfully by confirming the heating position where the transmission efficiency of SAWs improves most.
