  The identification and quantification of social costs in bridge maintenance have been studied over past two decades.There is a need to involve these social costs in the life cycle optimization of bridge maintenance.In this paper,we analyze and calculate the travel delay cost,crash cost and failure cost of the bridge maintenance in terms of current bridge management practices in Hong Kong.Travel delay cost can be calculated as the multiplication of the average social hourly reward and the average extra travel time (in hours)spent in the work zone congestion (i.e.slowing speed and idling in a queue) or detour route.The three cases,i.e.slowing speed,idling in a queue and using a detour ronte,are analyzed in terms of the volume/capacity ratio.The calculation formulas of extra time (in hours)per vehicle for these three cased are developed.The crash cost is calculated by comparing the accident rate (vehicles/hour) without and with maintenance works.
